V těchto dílech Janáček dospěl ve své skladatelské metodě k dokonalému tvaru propojením příběhu, slova a hudby. Publikace zkoumá vznik obou oper v kontextu bouřlivých dvacátých let dvacátého století, kdy se Janáček, narozený v polovině devatenáctého století, musel vyrovnávat s politickými i kulturními změnami danými novým uspořádáním Evropy po konci světové války, vznikem Československé republiky a proměnou paradigmat nejenom hudebních, uměleckých, ale i obecně společenských. Kniha sleduje nejen skladatelovy inspirační zdroje, hledání ideální dramaturgie a kompozičního řešení, ale také inscenační historii obou děl, úspěchy a neúspěchy při prosazování na zahraniční scény, spolupráci s Maxem Brodem a mnoho dalšího. Okrajově pojednává rovněž o Janáčkově Zápisníku zmizelého, o němž skladatel neuvažoval pouze jako o písňovém cyklu, ale detailně promýšlel i jeho poloscénickou, dramatickou formu. Text doprovází bohatý a často unikátní ikonografický materiál.Káťa Kabanová and The Cunning Little Vixen are the first operas from the last decade of Leoš Janáčeks life – a period often referred to as the composers grand old age. In these works, Janáček perfected his compositional method by intertwining story, words, and music. This publication examines the creation of both operas within the context of the turbulent 1920s, when Janáček, born in the mid-19th century, had to contend with the political and cultural changes brought about by the new order in Europe after the end of the World War, the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic, and the transformation of paradigms not only in music and art, but also in society in general. The book traces the composers sources of inspiration, his search for the ideal dramaturgy and compositional techniques, as well as the history of the staging of the two works, their successes and failures in gaining acceptance on foreign stages, his collaboration with Max Brod, and much more. It also touches on Janáčeks The Diary of One Who Disappeared, which the composer did not see merely as a song cycle, but also as a composition which could be performed in a semi-staged, dramatic form. The text is also accompanied by rich and often unique iconographic material.
