Prague 1900-2025 - Zdeněk Lukeš

Prague 1900-2025 - Zdeněk Lukeš Prague 1900-2025. A Guide to Modern Architecture follows a series of successful publications by architectural historian Zdeněk Lukeš and photographer Pavel Hroch. The book presents nearly 200 buildings in Prague, placing them within the context in which they were created. It will be published in both Czech and English editions. With a foreword by architect Eva Jiřičná, the book is arranged chronologically in four chapters. The first explores Historicism, Art Nouveau and Cubist architecture from 1900 to 1914, while the second focuses on buildings constructed in Prague between the two world wars. The third chapter covers post-war architecture, from Socialist Realism to buildings influenced by High-Tech architecture. The fourth and final section presents projects completed from the Velvet Revolution to the present day, as well as a selection of projects that have yet to be realised. Iconic landmarks such as the Municipal House, Jože Plečnik's alterations to Prague Castle, the Church of St Wenceslas in Vršovice, the Federal Assembly Building and the Dancing House are featured alongside smaller, less immediately conspicuous examples of residential architecture, including family houses and apartment buildings. Each is presented through a concise commentary and contemporary photographs. Every entry includes the date of construction, the names of the architects and the exact address, making the book a practical guide for exploring Prague on foot and discovering its architecture in situ.
